T-W-O

Holding back his urge to laugh, KJ grinned uncontrollably as he spoke of his little cousin during one of his visits to his house. It was about a number and it came with a tune.

“Did ya know there’s a song for the number 2?” The cheeky five years old announced proudly, as he stood there oblivious to the fact that his cousin is a human encyclopedia of sorts.
“No, why don’t you sing it for me.” KJ encouraged playfully.
Motivated by his cousin’s seemingly genuine curiosity, the boy uttered loudly, “T-W-O! T-W-O! ”
And so laughter stuck the words and tune to the back of my head.

On You Tube, there was a clip of Norah Jones with Elmo on Sesame Street singing an alternative of Don’t know why. It was sung Don’t know Y instead. It sounded cute.
So I thought, “Why not a song for a number instead?”
I peered into my mind for a spark and decided in a flash to rip off the cheeky boy’s idea instead. I had to. I would be damn if he knew about the copyright law and demanded royalties, but the boy left me no choice. It was either going to be about a number or an awkward guy who likes to write songs about a barista who failed terribly at an attempt to make small talk with him. Or perhaps it was the other way round.

“God damn Starbucks’ code of conduct! Why can’t they just keep quiet and make the damn mocha!”

I pondered over the two choices. Option two meant inevitable topic of the month with no career prospect whatsoever except when it reach the point where I couldn’t take the constant ribbing anymore and started crying, they would stuff food into my mouth to pacify me. Very tempting, but I had to go with the first after watching Rove interview Elmo. He was so cute I wanted to bite off his head in an Elmo frenzy. And so, I settled down and started penning the lyrics while humming a tune in my head.

The song was written and recorded last year in October while the guys here at PD Design were busy with a video project. Though inspired by KJ’s cheeky cousin, I found the composition reflecting on my thoughts yet again.

Verse1:
T-W-O
T-W-O
A child sings a song for the number 2
In a year or two
He would be in primary school
To learn about other numbers too

He would have a clue
To what the numbers do
If he learns to add and
Subtracts them too
He don’t have to be blue
Or feel like a fool
When his friends laugh when he don’t have a clue

Chorus:
Coz he still has
A song for a number to belong
And all his sadness would be gone
when he smiles and sing along to his song.

Verse2:
T-W-O
T-W-O
A song to remember when his grows old
In a life that’s full of
Things we can’t undo
A tune would find him a way to feel

the things we shouldn’t lose
the love that holds us through
the times our heart drop a tear or two
he don’t have to do
what people tell him to
to find his way with a heart that’s true

A Coffee Love Song

Written between 11th July-16th July, inspired by a pretty barista at my favourite Starbucks...Side effects of working in a Shaolin Temple. Please kindly post your honest opinion on the song...

Verse 1:

Verse 2:

Chorus:

Love Autopsy

On a few occasions, Raymond and I brought up how much we loved the song Love Autopsy in the movie Music And Lyrics and thought that it was a waste that they didn't write a full version for the soundtrack version. So I thought, why not i try to do it for them just for kicks. Was humming it half way through bathing and then i decided to sit down and finish it before i turn in.Wahaha, hope those you guys who like the movie wouldn't kick me in the nuts for this.

Love Autopsy

Figuring out you and me is
Like doing a love autopsy
They could operate all day long and
Never figure what went wrong
Even if you open my heart and
Sew it back up
You wouldn’t figure out
What love is all about

Figuring out love is like
Breaking my heart and fixing it up
You could search a lifetime and might
Still end up where you start
But if you find a way to
Ease my lonely heart
You would have figure out
What love is all about

Love autopsy
For you and me
Love autopsy
Love…
What went wrong

On a Train...

Typical thoughts when a person's on a train if they are idling. This song is penned between 19th - 21th june, partly inspired by music and lyrics' theme song sang by Drew Barrymore and Hugh Grant - "Way Back Into Love" that became the company anthem for the past few days. It's been a while since i busked at the Orchard Tunnel so it was quite hard to sing along while strumming my guitar but nevertheless, i manage to record a raw demo version after a few hours. Anyway, this is almost the final cut of the music and lyrics of the song with only some minor errors,if any, to amend. Hope i don't sound too bad. Gotta record it with a proper guitar arrangment when my fingernails grow back.Hehe...

On a Train…

On a train I sat there wondering
Where my life would take me to
Hoping I would cross dream avenue
If I kept on dreaming too
Maybe lovers’ lane would’ve have come my way
If I waited in line too
But these Monday mornings on a train
They lead nowhere near a truce

Chorus:
(Can)Between my reality and (be)the way I want it to
Be my fantasy where my hopes and dreams come through
Would I be able to
Find my way into a dream come through

As I sat there staring at my shoes
And my mind’s searching for a clue
As to why I am stuck in angry Ville
Hating what I cannot feel
But I believe life have its good news
For those who face its truth
With this thought in my head on the morning train
For my heart to affirm my will

Repeat chorus

Bridge:
Waiting for the next
Destination of my faith
hoping there will be a gal
Who would hop on to this train
I would sing my songs
All those that belong
To her heart and hope that it
Would make her sing along

Chorus 2:
She would be my reality my hopes and dreams come through
Would I be able to love her deep and true
Would I be able to
Find my way into a love that’s true.

A Friend's Song...

Written by my friend Daozhi when he was around 17 years old, re-arranged and recorded around 2 years ago during my NS days. It remained one of my favourite songs till this day.

My Thoughts .Your Hopes

There are times when doing isn't everything
When confusion & doubts start setting in
And in my corner of darkness.
I have asked
What in life is worth living for?

There are times my weathered soul cries
Seeking for the wings to fly,
Up into the clear blue sky
Hoping I can see your light
Like tears falling from my eyes
Sadness shall be driven away
And in your word I shall find
For the peace and joy in due time....

There are times my hopes and dreams just can’t find
A Love that forgives and gives me peace
And in my heart I have prayed to you
I have asked
What is love when my life’s yours?

Old compositions...

Alcohol, you are my best friend

Songs have the magic of encapsulating melancholic and elusive thoughts and feelings into a definite form to be reflected a upon. There are moments in life that trigger certain strong emotions good or bad that we find hard to let go. This song was inspired by my long time secondary school friend jiarong, lyrics taken from thoughts reflected in his blog entry. A simple song that was written to encapsulate his sadness, to be left behind so that he would be a much happier person.

Lyrics:

Night after night
when all is down
and the world is so dark
at this unearthly hour...
noone to call...
noone to talk to
i turn to my best friend...you

not because I love you but becoz you make me
forget who I am
living in this world
only numbness
reminds me of
how lonely we are inside

even for the night
I forget I am in pain
I Just need your warmth inside
To last me through the night

初恋

The first draft was written on 17 April Tuesday, between 3:15 - 4:55AM. After not being able to fall asleep, i switched on my com and doodled around with Ling Zhi Xuan's version of "Li Ren" playing in the background. Started to recall the conversations on the night when Raymond, Chris and I went for coffee after watching Sunshine at the picture house. So i started to pen down the lyrics with the help of a dictionary and some good song lyrics as reference as i continued to listen to Li Ren and recall what those conversations were about.
