Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

PD Design Studio wishes you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

The eCard is finally done.

It is actually a mini Flash Game where by you collect musical items to help the Quarter-Note Faery remember her tunes so that she can spread the songs of joy this festive season.

Graphics mainly done by Paul, some help from Sonia with the lovely animals and background. Programming solely done by Paul and music too is composed by Paul.

Feel free to forward it to a friend.

Thanks to Ray for reminding.

Bus 3D

I spent like close to a day sometime 2 weeks ago doing this up. It was a pitch for a project, which we had just found out, we were not awarded. Sigh... unfortunately.

I know what you must be thinking. CARS!!! I copied CARS! Well, that is really because that was the brief. Anyway, it was fun while it lasted.

Creatures 2

As per previous post, new model added to the collection. We are targeting at 3 creatures, though Paul did drew like 30 + of them. Well, we may add 1 or 2 more to the collection, but no promises. We'll have to see how we cope with the current workload.

Anyway, this creature here may be going under some surgery for the lower body and some minor refinements.

And a group shot, just for fun.

Creatures

Some 3D models I have been working on, probably around 4 days of work. Modeled, rigged and skinned but not textured. There's even some test animation. But for now, just 1 image.

Credits to Paul for the excellent character designs.

SHIFT: Concept Art

Not too long ago, the few of us at PD Design spent about 3.5 days or so doing up a game concept proposal with quite some concept artwork, 3d demo video. Our efforts paid off, and we were selected for MDA's Invigorate for 2008.

I won't be able to share the game's concept and the demo video we have come up with. But I will be sharing the concept artwork Paul has done. I really like what he had done, especially considering the short time frame he had. These are just some of the artwork he has done, there are more. But these are my favourite and I am sharing them.

The bad news.... we might be doing very drastic changes in our art direction....

Mantis - Quick Update

The lighting and materials are sort of driving me nuts..... A quick update again.... Lost lost....

Here's an update to this project.

The scene will probably look like this. Some more details will be added, after that will mainly be materials and lighting. And I will probably call this done.

Mechanical Praying Mantis - WIP

Another quick update. A quick texturing tryout here.

I forgot to do the feelers!!

A quick update for this model. Getting a bit lazy with the details... so this is quite final. Perhaps some tweaks here and there, if I were to do any.

Finally, another WIP. Legs, lower body and head are still very much in early stage of detailing.
Maybe, I will do some modifications to the foremost blades as well.

Comments are welcome!

Not another month without a post again!!! CUBICAN!!!

Nope, it's not going to happen!! Well, at least not this time.

Here is the website for CUBICAN. A project by PD Design Studio. It was under Media Development Authority's initiative, Invigorate for PC Casual Games.

At the moment, it's still a prototype. We have set up this site to offer some sneak peeks. There are some information about the game, a trailer and some artworks. There is also a forum (very empty right now...) that has a link to the Prototype download. You can download the game and offer some suggestions and feedback.

So do drop by the site, give us some comments.

T-W-O

Holding back his urge to laugh, KJ grinned uncontrollably as he spoke of his little cousin during one of his visits to his house. It was about a number and it came with a tune.

“Did ya know there’s a song for the number 2?” The cheeky five years old announced proudly, as he stood there oblivious to the fact that his cousin is a human encyclopedia of sorts.
“No, why don’t you sing it for me.” KJ encouraged playfully.
Motivated by his cousin’s seemingly genuine curiosity, the boy uttered loudly, “T-W-O! T-W-O! ”
And so laughter stuck the words and tune to the back of my head.

On You Tube, there was a clip of Norah Jones with Elmo on Sesame Street singing an alternative of Don’t know why. It was sung Don’t know Y instead. It sounded cute.
So I thought, “Why not a song for a number instead?”
I peered into my mind for a spark and decided in a flash to rip off the cheeky boy’s idea instead. I had to. I would be damn if he knew about the copyright law and demanded royalties, but the boy left me no choice. It was either going to be about a number or an awkward guy who likes to write songs about a barista who failed terribly at an attempt to make small talk with him. Or perhaps it was the other way round.

“God damn Starbucks’ code of conduct! Why can’t they just keep quiet and make the damn mocha!”

I pondered over the two choices. Option two meant inevitable topic of the month with no career prospect whatsoever except when it reach the point where I couldn’t take the constant ribbing anymore and started crying, they would stuff food into my mouth to pacify me. Very tempting, but I had to go with the first after watching Rove interview Elmo. He was so cute I wanted to bite off his head in an Elmo frenzy. And so, I settled down and started penning the lyrics while humming a tune in my head.

The song was written and recorded last year in October while the guys here at PD Design were busy with a video project. Though inspired by KJ’s cheeky cousin, I found the composition reflecting on my thoughts yet again.

Verse1:
T-W-O
T-W-O
A child sings a song for the number 2
In a year or two
He would be in primary school
To learn about other numbers too

He would have a clue
To what the numbers do
If he learns to add and
Subtracts them too
He don’t have to be blue
Or feel like a fool
When his friends laugh when he don’t have a clue

Chorus:
Coz he still has
A song for a number to belong
And all his sadness would be gone
when he smiles and sing along to his song.

Verse2:
T-W-O
T-W-O
A song to remember when his grows old
In a life that’s full of
Things we can’t undo
A tune would find him a way to feel

the things we shouldn’t lose
the love that holds us through
the times our heart drop a tear or two
he don’t have to do
what people tell him to
to find his way with a heart that’s true
