T-W-O

Holding back his urge to laugh, KJ grinned uncontrollably as he spoke of his little cousin during one of his visits to his house. It was about a number and it came with a tune.

“Did ya know there’s a song for the number 2?” The cheeky five years old announced proudly, as he stood there oblivious to the fact that his cousin is a human encyclopedia of sorts.
“No, why don’t you sing it for me.” KJ encouraged playfully.
Motivated by his cousin’s seemingly genuine curiosity, the boy uttered loudly, “T-W-O! T-W-O! ”
And so laughter stuck the words and tune to the back of my head.

On You Tube, there was a clip of Norah Jones with Elmo on Sesame Street singing an alternative of Don’t know why. It was sung Don’t know Y instead. It sounded cute.
So I thought, “Why not a song for a number instead?”
I peered into my mind for a spark and decided in a flash to rip off the cheeky boy’s idea instead. I had to. I would be damn if he knew about the copyright law and demanded royalties, but the boy left me no choice. It was either going to be about a number or an awkward guy who likes to write songs about a barista who failed terribly at an attempt to make small talk with him. Or perhaps it was the other way round.

“God damn Starbucks’ code of conduct! Why can’t they just keep quiet and make the damn mocha!”

I pondered over the two choices. Option two meant inevitable topic of the month with no career prospect whatsoever except when it reach the point where I couldn’t take the constant ribbing anymore and started crying, they would stuff food into my mouth to pacify me. Very tempting, but I had to go with the first after watching Rove interview Elmo. He was so cute I wanted to bite off his head in an Elmo frenzy. And so, I settled down and started penning the lyrics while humming a tune in my head.

The song was written and recorded last year in October while the guys here at PD Design were busy with a video project. Though inspired by KJ’s cheeky cousin, I found the composition reflecting on my thoughts yet again.

Verse1:
T-W-O
T-W-O
A child sings a song for the number 2
In a year or two
He would be in primary school
To learn about other numbers too

He would have a clue
To what the numbers do
If he learns to add and
Subtracts them too
He don’t have to be blue
Or feel like a fool
When his friends laugh when he don’t have a clue

Chorus:
Coz he still has
A song for a number to belong
And all his sadness would be gone
when he smiles and sing along to his song.

Verse2:
T-W-O
T-W-O
A song to remember when his grows old
In a life that’s full of
Things we can’t undo
A tune would find him a way to feel

the things we shouldn’t lose
the love that holds us through
the times our heart drop a tear or two
he don’t have to do
what people tell him to
to find his way with a heart that’s true
